BRIAN WILSON and PET SOUNDS, THE BEACH BOYS and THE MYTH OF CALIFORNIA
This seminar investigates the conditions actuating the rise of Brian Wilson, rock’s first great auteur, from his years as a founding architect of pop music through the creation of his landmark album, Pet Sounds. It examines his life and work in the studio, as he formulates an idealized vision of California – a Virtual Geography enacted through music.
THE SONGS and RECORDINGS of PAUL SIMON
This seminar examines the written and recorded work of Paul Simon. To many, his work both projected and reflected the zeitgeist of New York during the second half of the 20th century. We will examine selected compositions and recordings expanding the Great American Songbook – their inspiration, construction and historical place within the soundscape of modern pop music.
